Funding for new child care spaces

The Ministry of Education has allocated $3.6 million in Child Care Capital funding to the Upper Grand District School Board.
The Ministry had earmarked $120 million in funding for new construction of child care spaces in Ontario. Over the next three years, the funding will be dedicated to building safe, licensed child care spaces in Ontario schools where there is “significant demand.”
Earlier this month, two Upper Grand projects were approved for funding. The projects will create new child care spaces at Palmerston Public School and Centennial Hylands Elementary School in Shelburne.
“Our government is proud to invest in quality licensed child care in local schools. It gives families greater access to care, and makes the transition to full-day kindergarten a more positive experience,” said Ontario’s Education Minister Liz Sandals. “Congratulations to Upper Grand District School Board and the local community on these exciting projects.”
More than $2 million in funding was approved for the creation of 73 child care spaces at Centennial Hylands and more than $1.5 million was approved for 49 spaces at Palmerston PS.
The project will allow for four new rooms at Centennial Hylands (two for preschool aged children, one for infants and one for toddlers) and three new rooms in Palmerston (one room each for infants, toddlers and preschool children).
“We are very pleased to be receiving Ministry funding to support the construction of two child care centres in our board,” said Mark Bailey, Chair of the board.
“Palmerston and Shelburne are areas the board and the counties identified as areas in need of licensed care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We are looking forward to working together to bring a much needed service to these two communities.”
