“Stone Soup” show sets tone for March Break activities at Museum

The beloved folk story Stone Soup, brought to life by Puppets Elora will be just one of many March Break activities for area families at the Dufferin County Museum and Archives (DCMA) next week.

 

Monday, March 14 – Critters and Creepy Crawlies 

Critters and Creepy Crawlies: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

See and learn about amazing creatures with critter specialist, Jennifer Weaver. This presentation includes reptiles, birds, amphibians, invertebrates and mammals.

 

Explore and Play: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Stick around and check out a collection of creepy crawly bugs and insects from the Dufferin County Forest. Explore animal artifacts, including the spectacular Mastodon bone discovered by William Jelly in 1887. Navigate the giant spider web maze, make a reptile craft, and get your face painted like a critter.

 

Cost from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.: $8

 

Tuesday, March 15 – Stone Soup with Puppets Elora

Young Chefs Workshop: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Sign up to make a delicious pot of Stone Soup Learn about making wholesome food on a tight budget. Suitable for ages 8 to 12. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

 

Puppet Show: 2 p.m. to 2.30 p.m.

Join us for an interactive telling of the beloved folk story “Stone Soup” by Puppets Elora. Learn how co-operation is a key ingredient for a strong community. Stick around to sample some stone soup and tour the Museum.

 

Puppet-making Workshop: 2.30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Make and take home your own puppet inspired by characters from the Stone Soup play. Suitable for ages 6 and up. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

Wednesday, March 16 – Magic & Magical Art

Magical Art Workshop: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Sign up to create some wacky magical art. We will be horsing around to make a graffiti mural and using milk to create some crazy marbled paintings. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

 

Magic Show: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Don’t miss out on a spectacular show with the Magical Duda, Cory Clarke. Laugh and be amazed as the silly Magical Duda performs tricks right before your eyes. Help perform tricks and make special animal friends appear by saying the magic words “doodely doodle doo.”

 

Balloon Sculpting Workshop 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Sign up to learn how to make balloon objects and animals with the Magical Duda. Suitable for ages 7 and up. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

Thursday March 17th – Move & Groove

Square Dance Workshop

1 pm to 3 pm

Get up and dance at the DCMA! Square dancing has deep roots in Dufferin County. What better place to learn the tradition of square dancing than the DCMA barn. Learn basic calls, moves and some simple dances. Great for ages 9 and up. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

 

Drums Make and Play Workshop: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Let’s make and decorate some sono-tube drums, then it’s time to make some noise! Participants will learn the basics of rhythm, tempo and playing as a group. Suitable for ages 8 and up. Pre-register by calling 1-877-941-7787.

Cost: $8 for both workshops.

 

Friday March 18th – Art Attack : 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Are you crafty? Do you like to stamp, weave, press, colour, cut and paste? If yes, then this day is for you. Come out for an afternoon of everything arts and crafts. Make and take home your own special creations. This day is all about being creative, trying something new, and having fun. Wear clothes you can get dirty in. Suitable for ages 6 and up.

Cost: $8.

 

Saturday, March 19 – Sugaring Off Party: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Let’s celebrate the maple syrup season with an old-fashioned sugaring off party. Put on your jeans, plaid, toques or straw hats and join us for a “maple-ing-in” ceremony at 1pm sharp. Visit maple syrup artifacts and complete the passport challenge activity to earn some sweet maple taffy. Weather permitting, visit our tapped trees, see sap boiling and sample yummy bannock.
