Forget JLo: CDHHS students host first ever Idol

Shelburne’s Centre Dufferin District High School (CDHHS) students held the first-ever “Centre Dufferin Idol” contest for a musical launch of March Break last Friday.

Organized by CDDHS music teacher Andrea Parsons, the event filled the gymnasium with enthusiastic students cheering the contestants on as they took to the stage to perform for their teachers and peers.

Sound for the event was run by Len Guchardi, and the three judges for the competition were Heidi Vanderwal, Devin Hentsch, and Nina Murray, all musically skilled teaching instructors at CDDHS.

The students chose songs from pop, to classic Elvis, to Broadway show tunes.

Judges marked each of the contestants’ performances on a scale from 5-10 to earn the participant 50% of their total score. Once the performances concluded, contestants held signs on stage that showed their designated text number, while students in the audience voted by text for the contestant they felt had earned the title for the other half of the total points.

Principal Pat Hamilton congratulated the winners and prizes were provided in the form of gift certificates from School Days Cafe.

Grade 12 students, Edie Shillum and Josh Cameron, did a great job co-hosting the talent show, and the CDDHS Drama students kept the audience entertained between sets with “On the Bus” interactive improvisation skits.

Congratulations from the Shelburne Free Press to all the contestants for their fantastic performances. Contributed Photo.
