Cubs struggling to break .500

“This was a batters game. We’re getting guys on base, we just aren’t getting them home,” said Mansfield Cubs coach George Linger after Sunday’s loss to the Creemore Braves.

The Cubs have been in a slump when it comes to scoring.

They aren’t playing a bad game, they just aren’t scoring and have suffered a string of losses that are keeping them on the minus side in the standings.

The game against Creemore on June 9, started with the Braves leading 2–0 in the early going.

In the fourth inning the Cubs loaded the bases on a single from Jess Ragazzon, but with scoring a real possibility they retired the side with no one crossing the plate.

The Braves had two men on base in the bottom of the inning but Cubs catcher Rob Kinsley made the throw to third to catch the batter off base for the third out.

The fifth inning again had the Cubs in scoring position on a single from Jarrett Abbott and a well placed hit to shallow centre field from Billy Hawkins.

Sensing trouble, the Braves placed a new pitcher on the mound.

Mansfield tried a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third but again the inning ended with no scoring.

The seventh inning brought in another Braves run with a single run home run over the left field fence.

Run number four came when a Creemore batter drove the ball deep into right field, right along the foul line, that caused a delay in the field and scored another run for the Braves.

The final was 4–0 for the Creemore squad.

Cubs pitcher Tyler Linger was on the mound for the entire game.

“It was a good game,” Linger said. “It was a team effort. We just didn’t come around for bats.”

Despite the four Creemore runs, Linger said defensively the squad played a good game.

“We had a solid defence,” he said. “It’s a lot easier on the mound when you’ve got eight guys backing you.”

The Cubs will be back in Mansfield to face the Clearview Orioles with results coming to late to report.

They will return to the Mansfield diamond this Sunday, June 16, to host the Bolton Dodgers.

The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
