Tuesday saw 26 banners displaying Hometown Heroes who fought for our freedom being hung throughout the downtown core.

Members of the organizing committee included Mayor Ken Bennington, who got a little choked up while talking about what this project meant to him, thanked all of those who were in attendance for the unveiling.

This project will see the banners hanging in the downtown core before they are taken down, to be once again hung on display, this time in the Warriors Hall of the Shelburne Legion Branch 220.

The Hometown Hero Program is a partnership between The Royal Canadian Legion, Shelburne Branch #220, with the support of the Town of Shelburne.

“The committee coordinating this project consists of myself, Linda Orvis, Ken Bennington and Dan Sample,” Lesa Peat, President of the Shelburne Legion, told the Shelburne Free Press this past summer. “This initiative will allow residents to purchase banners bearing the names and pictures of those who have served, or who are currently serving our country. Each individual banner is unique and will honor a specific veteran and we hope to include their picture, branch of service, and era of service on it.

“The program is non-political and non-partisan. It is purely a living memorial to those who served our country.”

It was suggested that banners shall be displayed for a specified period of time, before being retired and given to the veteran or the celebrated vet’s family as a keepsake.
