Student: Alyssa Martin
Placement: Grand Valley & District
Public School
This week Alyssa Martin from Centre Dufferin District High School shares a little bit about her experience and how Grand Valley & District Public School is contributing to their community’s future.
This public school teaches kids the basic skills they need in life from kindergarten to grade 8. There are 19 teachers and 6 other staff all making a positive impact on every single child that walks through the halls of the school.
I am doing a co-op placement as an Early Childhood Educator within Ms. Hill’s split Grade 1&2 classroom. This job comes with many responsibilities such as checking the kid’s agendas while switching home reading books, reading individually with each student, switching the calendar every day, and setting out learning squares on the carpet. I have learned a lot about how children learn, about how to communicate on a variety of different levels, and how to engage students in learning activities. In the future, I hope to teach an art lesson and/or other lessons, plan an entire day, and also to lead classes practicing the national anthem in sign language.
Working within this school has exposed me to many different types of jobs such as a Guidance Counselor, Principal and Vice Principal, Secretary, Custodian, Teacher, Librarian, School Bus Driver, and School Nurse.
Grand Valley & District Public School is helping kids take steps to further their lives and futures. The school is involved in a lot of events such as raising money by selling poinsettias, doing the Terry Fox Run and encouraging every student to bring in a toonie, raising money doing book fairs, and lots more.
