The Centre Dufferin District High School Royals have taken an early lead in the District 4 standings after winning their first two games to start the season.

In their outing, they defeated Wellington Heights Secondary School 65 – 20.

The second game saw them matched up against Emmanuel Christian High School out of Fergus.

The Royals started out strong and kept hitting the basket to go ahead with a 50 -21 lead midway in the third quarter.

By the time the teams back on the court to start the fourth quarter the Royals had extended their lead to 67-21.

They kept up the pressure to score 19 points in the final quarter to leave the court with an 86 – 34 win to take over first place in the District.

“We just made shots,” said Royal’s team member, Nathan Isaac, after the game. “We had good communication and planning and we succeeded. On defence we were trapping them and double teaming them. We tried to contest the shots as well as we can. I think we’re going to continue to win games and tournaments. There might be some close games but we’re going to keep growing as a team. Our goal is to win CWOSSA and go to OFSSA.”

There are only four teams in the District 4 senior line-up so the squad won’t get a lot of different competition this year.

Westside Secondary School in Orangeville was unable to put a senior team together this year.

So far, the Royals are in first place followed by Wellington Heights. Norwell District Secondary School is in third place followed by Emmanuel Christian.

The Royals have one road game to finish before the Christmas break.

Their next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, when they will host Norwell District.

Game time is 4:00 p.m.
