Sheila Apple staffs the CASSH display of Stanton Hotel at Dufferin County Museum’s Heritage Day last Saturday, showing a life-size Win Hand and drawing of the 1863 hotel as it was and will be. There appeared to be lots of interest in the display and the hotel’s history. Dufferin County council is committed to sharing the costs of moving the building to the museum grounds and the Community Association to Save Stanton Hotel is completing a Trillium application to cover better than half the costs of total restoration plus it has fundraisers set for September 2013 and beyond. Total costs of moving and restoration in keeping with specifications by Heritage Restoration authority Victor Snow would not exceed $250,000, according to the initial application to Trillium. The heritage value of the building – said to be the only one remaining of its design in Ontario – is enhanced by the colorful history of its builder and first operator, Win Hand. The smaller photo is of a print of the commissioned Laura Berry painting of the hotel. Sheila Apple and her husband, Dave, own and occupy the century house built for Hand in Orangeville.
