The Mansfield Senior Cubs hosted the Barrie Angels for their home opener on the diamond in Mansfield on Wednesday, May 11.
It was a perfect evening for baseball with a bright sky and a good temperature for playing ball.
Jeff Christman started on the mound for the Cubs.
Barrie was up to bat first and had no runs in the first inning.
The Cubs first at-bat of the season ended with a double play and a fly-ball.
It was a big second inning for the Angels. They loaded the bases then brought in
four runs.
A bit hit to right field brought in two more runs to give the Barrie squad a 6-0 lead.
The Cubs were shut-down in the third with no men getting on base.
Barrie was up by eight in the fourth inning after bringing in two runs on a line-drive down the third base line.
Jordan Metz got on base for the Cubs in the fourth with a nice hit to centre field but the Mansfield team couldn’t capitalize and the side retired.
The rest of the game was a real defensive battle, with the Cubs unable to score.
The Angels brought in an additional two runs to end the game 10-0.
There are 13 teams in the Senior Division of the North Dufferin Baseball League this year meaning there will be plenty of good match-ups as the season goes on.
This was the first week of play for the Senior Division so it’s too early to tell which teams will be moving to the top of the standings.
The Cubs will be in Owen Sound on Wednesday, May 25, to take on the Baysox.
They will return to the diamond in Mansfield on Sunday, May 29, to host the Clearview Orioles.
Game time is 2:00 p.m.
