In November 2012, the Royal Canadian Legion released a commemorative pin and T-shirt celebrating our Canadian Aboriginal Veterans. Currently for sale at the Royal Canadian Legion, many Canadians today have absolutely no idea to what extent these brave warriors contributed to the freedom in Canada that we are privileged to enjoy today.
According to this website, http://canadianaboriginalveterans.ca, a prime example of a turning point that may have changed history had First Nation Warriors sided with the Americans occurred in 1812 when Britain was then pre-occupied with European concerns and of course, Napoleon. The US found that pre-occupation to be a great opportunity to attempt over taking both Upper and Lower Canada, ridding North America of the British entirely. Had it not been for the participation of Warriors from 15 First Nations siding with the British against the United States, Canada may well have been lost and become just another portion of the U.S. A quick visit to the aboriginals Veterans Tribute Honor List at www.vcn.bc.ca will be a humbling experience revealing the faces to whom we as Canadians are grateful to. Haudenosaunee, Ojibway, Secwepemc, Coast Salish, Nlaka’pamux are just a few of the Aboriginal heritages listed of Warriors from across Canada spanning from 1914 and onward. A proud tradition as Canadian Aboriginals often follow in their parent’s footsteps and can boast being third, fourth and fifth generation serving members. Following the motto of Truth – Duty – Honor – Service Before Self, this wonderfully colored commemorative pin, celebrating Canada’s brave Aboriginal Warriors is a clear reminder of the very rich history of Canada and all who contributed during times so volatile.
Lest We Forget: Note worthy for those of us who are unfamiliar with olde English, Lest We Forget is a very old expression, lest meaning : with the intention of preventing something undesirable, to avoid the risk of. With that understanding, knowing the cost of war, Lest We Forget, Indeed!
