Dear editor:
I have always enjoyed attending the Fall Fairs in our communities. It is easy to appreciate all the sights and sounds – the midway rides, the games, the food, the exhibits and competitions – but there is one aspect of the fair that I believe is the foundation for a Fall Fair – agriculture.
For 146 years the Shelburne Fall Fair has been a chance for farmers, in all areas of agriculture, to come together and showcase their bounty from their growing season. This year’s theme ‘Preserving the Harvest’ highlights the importance of agri-food. Across the province the agri-food industry contributes more than $33 billion to the Ontario economy, agriculture in Dufferin makes a significant contribution to our economic prosperity.
I grew up on a farm and participated in 4-H as a teenager. If your family has not had this opportunity, attending the fair is a great way to get close to Ontario’s livestock. Your children will be able to see cattle, horses, sheep, rabbits, goats and more in competition and talk to farm families to learn about their daily care and contribution to Ontario’s agricultural production.
Thank you to the Shelburne Agricultural Society members and all the volunteers who work so hard all year long to make this exciting weekend happen. Take the time to thank the volunteers for their contribution!
I hope to see you at the Fair!
