Crime Prevention Week: Nov. 3–9, Lock it, or Lose it!

November 7, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Breaking and entering, theft from and theft of vehicles are ongoing crimes which directly impact victims and place a strain on valuable police resources. These types of crimes are not new and are often preventable through community engagement.

“Lock It or Lose It” is a crime prevention initiative developed with the support of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) aimed at encouraging drivers to take simple precautions to help prevent crime and victimization.

An unlocked door or an open window is an invitation to thieves. The “Lock It or Lose It” program reminds drivers to always roll up their vehicles’ windows; keep valuables out of sight; lock their doors; and pocket their keys.

On Tuesday, November 5, Grey County OPP officers will be checking vehicles throughout their jurisdiction to confirm that they are locked and that no valuables have been left in plain view. A small notice will be placed on every vehicle checked indicating what safety precautions were neglected and offer a few simple prevention tips drivers can use to protect their vehicles against theft.

By educating communities and being proactive in the reduction of crime, the OPP remains dedicated to eliminating the opportunity for crime in support of the OPP’s vision of Safe Communities – A Secure Ontario.
