Police warn public about conduct at youth hockey games

February 19, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The Shelburne Police have in recent months responded to several calls at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (Shelburne Arena) in regards to heated encounters between parents, spectators and coaches.

Although no charges have been laid to date, some of these incidents have pushed the boundaries. Those involved were strongly warned about their conduct, however if these warnings do not solve the problem, issuing trespass notices or laying criminal charges when appropriate may be the only options left.

Shelburne Police recognizes that the majority of those attending youth hockey games are keeping the peace and behaving appropriately. Unfortunately it only takes one or two people to lose their temper which can ruin the experience for everyone – especially the youth playing the hockey game.

Police are reminding all those who attend the hockey games (spectators and those directly involved) to remember the example they are setting for our youth. Conflicts and disagreements need to be resolved in a respectful and civil manner.  Name calling, threatening conduct (verbal or through body language), damaging property and violent actions will not be tolerated.

Potential charges may include but are not limited to: Disturbing the Peace, Trespass to Property, Criminal Harassment, Threatening Conduct, Mischief and Assault.

Shelburne Police are encouraging everyone to do their part and keep the Minor Hockey experience a positive one.
