Newfie Nite in Shelburne a huge success

For the last four years, Shelburne’s Legion has hosted Newfie Nite, a celebration of Newfoundlanders’ cultures and traditions. What is surprising to most are the huge numbers of Newfie’s who attend the evening, and though not all who attend are Nefie’s the numbers reach approximately 250 in all!

The evening is no small feat to prepare for and Executive Legion Board member, Donna Barr couldn’t be prouder as she is largely responsible for organizing Newfie Nite which was held on the evening of March 8th.

“It takes at least 20 volunteers just to prepare the food and of course , people love to eat a traditional Newfoundlander meal. We’re a small community but Newfie Nite is really a spectacular event and it’s a lot of fun,” commented Barr.

Each year those who attend can enjoy a traditional Newfoundlander’s boiled dinner which consists of boiled cabbage, carrots, cottage rolls and more. Following the excellent dinner, Newfie’s enjoy dancing to the traditional Newfoundlander live music featured by the Off Your Rocker Band.

Executive Legion Board Member, Donna Barr offers this explanation as to why the evening is such a success commenting, “I was responsible for decorating and we really do have a Newfoundlander theme going with paper fish hanging from the ceiling, a huge crab stuffed, a life sized fisherman and lobster net, and Newfoundland Flag. The evening is just so much fun and people come from Toronto and all over the area, it’s not just people from Shelburne. Of course one of the highlights of the evening is the ‘Kiss The Cod Contest’ and winners get a certificate. I think we’re successful because there are a lot of Newfoundlanders in the area and it’s a really fun evening celebrating the culture.”
