Shelburne Library news

March 19, 2014   ·   0 Comments

March Break certainly seemed to go by quickly with lots of successful events happening for our young families.

Creature Quest on Tuesday was sold out. Any of the performances with animals, reptiles etc., are very popular and this year was no exception. There were a number of different animals than we have featured other years and both of our staff members, Jeanne and Grace were seen sporting live “Lemur collars”. Wednesday, despite the rather stormy weather, saw well over 120 in attendance for Robin Hood. This was a great show as the actors are exceedingly adept at pulling in members of the audience, providing props and having them act out some of the characters in the show. Even adults took their turn with great humour; all of which added to the fun. Erick Traplin rounded off the entertainment with a fun-filled interactive program that had children singing and dancing on the stage.

On Friday, the craft session, making Dream catchers was also well attended with 15 youngsters creating their own versions of these symbolic hangings.

In addition, our Book Sale brought in a very nice sum of money for new books and we thank Jim Worobec and George Barton for their invaluable help in organizing these books so they always look tidy and attractive. It makes you want to purchase some even as you tell us `how many books you have at home.` There were some exceptionally good quality books for sale this time.

Now we begin our regular week of programs.

• Children’s Programs: Story time for Toddlers on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and the regular Story Time on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

• Lego Club: Our very popular new program will be on again on Wednesday with a new theme and new activities. Can you imagine we had 39 youngsters last time and you can tell by the creations displayed behind the circulation desk, how much fun they are having.

• Pizza & Pages Teen Book Club: It will be held Thursday, March 20, this week. You might be interested to know that one of the young participants joins the club every month through SKYPE.

• Summer Student Positions: You will see elsewhere in the paper and on our website that we are advertising two Summer Student positions. We have already had a number of enquiries from diligent young folks out there looking for their summer jobs. If you know of someone who might be interested, let him or her know. We have had such good luck over the years recruiting and hiring wonderful young people who have brought so much to our programs and to our library.  You can tell how much a part of our library they have become because they keep coming back and adding more and more expertise and talent to our programs.

• Awards: Not only do the young people in the community add so much to our library but we have just recently received word that three of our adult volunteers will be receiving the 2014  Ontario Volunteer Service Awards.

Our Volunteers, Beverly Ford-Arnold, Cathy Earle and Jim Worobec will be receiving their Awards at a ceremony on April 30, 2014 in Mississauga. We are delighted to have this recognition awarded to these hard-working and supportive volunteers.
