The Shelburne Junior C Vets lacrosse team has announced their home opener for the 2014 season.
Friday, May 9, will be the opening day at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex when the Vets will host the Six Nations Warriors.
The Vets will follow through with the first road game the following night again with a game against Six Nations in the Warriors home barn.
Six Nations is one of two new teams in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League this season along with new entry – the Oakville Hawks.
This year the Jr C league is divided into two divisions from last season’s three.
After a slow season last year, the Vets are building the current team for 2014.
In 2013, the Shelburne squad ended the regular season with a 6–9–1 record and a seventh place finish in the West Division of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League.
They failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs.
The squad is now going through the try-out phase for the 2014 team, with upcoming sessions scheduled for Friday, April 11, Wednesday, April 16, and Friday, 18.
The Vets should have a solid core of players returning from last year’s squad lead by captain Charlie McCannell.
The team lost five overage players from last year’s team which included fifth year players Tyler Greer and Pete Bannon along with third year veteran Nick Little, while Quinn Fraser will also be out this season due to an injury over the winter.
The positive outlook is there is great number of quality overage local midget players looking to fill those spots.
Head coach Mark Early is back behind the bench for his third season.
