Honoring our Mother’s; Thank God for their Love and Compassion:
On this bright sunny day we entered with gladness to Praise God and Celebrate the Mothers in our lives. Joy filled our worship and encouraged our spirits. Pastor Don shared announcements and Prayer needs; we pray for those who are ill this season and for those who are mourning a mom today, we ask God to heal them and fill them with gratitude for the wonderful memories mothers bring. Pastor Don thanked God in prayer;
“Dear God thank you for our Mothers, for their love and sound teaching, Bless them all today in Jesus name, Amen.”
We have all had a mother, some of us may have an aging mum or we are caring for one in poor health, some of us have had to say good-bye, and even those of us who didn’t have a healthy relationship with our mums, we still all had to have a mum to be here. They have all impacted our lives in one way or another. Today I want to observe the love, concern, patience and compassion of mothers in comparison to our God. God is the perfect example of those attributes as described in Isaiah 66:12,13; I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child.”
The Bible depicts many maternal attributes to God, in Matthew 23:37 He is a protector, Jesus wants to protect us when we are hurt, instead of rejecting Him thinking He won’t fulfill our needs we ought to run into His arms. Who knows what we need better than our Creator? The Love of a Godly mother mirrors God’s love for us, it is wide, long, deep and high, it is sacrificial and compassionate, (Ephesians 3:19). God voluntarily became a man in the flesh to be able to relate to our lives and ultimately lay it down to save us all, (2 Corinthians 8:9). God’s character is compassionate and filled with patience, so is a godly mother’s. Moms love to encourage their children and do it out of love,(Romans 15:5). Thank God for putting His attributes of love, patience, compassion in our mothers.
In today’s age, the expectations of being a mother are not quite what they used to be. Parenting roles were once respected and clear but society seems to have abandoned what it truly means to honor our parents so it can be discouraging for Mothers to keep up with what is expected. Our Past educational system encouraged respect and godly rearing; now the motto is anything goes and must be tolerated. Thank God for preserving His Word by which we can still raise our kids to love and reverence Him despite what society says.
Let’s go back some 2000 years to look at Mary mother of Jesus. Do you think she had struggles with expectations? She had to face the challenge of a tarnished reputation; conceiving out of wedlock was considered an act of unfaithfulness, not something to be proud of. I am sure we all have had our share of things we are not proud of too, (Matthew 1:18,19). Then the Challenge of poverty coupled with seeing the hatred for her Son and probably the pain it caused him, those cannot be easy and we’ve faced similar instances, and a mother’s instinct is to love, protect and care for their children’s hearts and minds the best they can, (Luke 2:21-24, Matthew 2:13). Mary also faced being a single mother during Jesus’ teen years, and finally faced His early death, again anguish filled moments for any mother. Fortunately, Mary had resources to live through these moments with faith and grace.
Mary had a strong commitment to do God’s will even if she didn’t know the pain that lay ahead of her. She also had the privilege of having God’s hand on her; she was sharing in God’s creation of new life. Mary was blessed with the friendship of Elizabeth; together they encouraged and supported each other. Mary having had a godly upbringing had what she needed to raise Jesus in the knowledge and obedience to God. Mary also lived by faith in God’s promises, the hope of eternal life. This even protected Jesus throughout his own life challenges and he remained sinless.
Beloved, we may not all have perfect obedient children like Jesus, but with His grace we can teach our children the same reverence for God and share the same hope of eternity which Mary possessed. We can continue to encourage one another and glorify God by giving our time and obedience to our Moms. We can thank them for all we have learned at their knee and honor their legacy by following Jesus. Let us thank God for the long-suffering compassionate love mothers have for their children. Have a blessed week! Asherey Shalom!
