Cubs shut–out in home game

June 4, 2014   ·   0 Comments

It was just one of those nights. The Mansfield Cubs had a hard time with the Bolton Brewers when they came to Mansfield on Wednesday, May 28, and were shut out 11–0 by the visitors.

A Bolton home run in the first inning and a grand slam in third had the Cubs trailing by seven before the game was half over. The Cubs were getting hits and putting men on base, they just couldn’t follow up with the hits needed to cross the plate to score.

The fifth inning saw Logan Wallace hit a single to put two Cubs players on base, but the side retired and they couldn’t score. The Cubs again had two men on base in the sixth inning when Brad Caldwell hit a single and a Mansfield player took the base on a walk, but again they couldn’t finish it off with another hit. It was a frustrating evening sure and the Cubs had three different pitches on the mound in an attempt to shut down the Brewers hitters. “They’re (Bolton) are a tough team, they’re a good hitting team. They’re one of the best in Ontario,” said Cubs coach George Linger after Wednesday’s game.

“They just hit some good pitches. They’re a good hitting team and you just can’t pitch around those guys.” The Cubs did play a good game, fielding well and making some good plays. “We did pretty good defensively,” Linger said. “We had a few errors but when you get that many balls hit against you it’s pretty hard to come up clean on every one of them.”

The squad hosted a double header against the Nobleton Cornhuskers on Sunday, June 1, in Mansfield, but came up short in both games. After the weekend, the Cubs have one win, four losses, and two ties, for the season to leave them in the number 12 spot in the 14 team Senior division of the North Dufferin Baseball League.

They will be in Ivy on Friday, June 6, to take on the Leafs.

Returning to Mansfield on Sunday, June 8, the Cubs will host the Aurora Jays. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
