Shelburne Library news

June 4, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The excitement this week at the library along with all our other on going programs is lining up some special guests for our TD Summer reading program. Be sure and check our web site and facebook to see the lineup as we continue our planning. As well, the first session of out Rainbow or crazy loom club will be happening on Thursday. We have had lots of requests for this and we are all looking forward to the innovative and creative uses that will come out of these sessions. In particular this will be an opportunity for young people to work together and help learn new techniques. For those of you who do not know anything about this latest hobby, look for our photos and display. Please register at the library and talk to Emily if you have any questions at 519 925-2168. I have just started reading Terry Fallis’ new book, ‘No Relation’, and I am sure it is going to be as delightful and as humourous a read as his others. If you haven’t read his others, check them out at the library; you will be in for a fun and rollicking read. Now as I mentioned last week, I am going to continue featuring some of our databases. I hope you are getting a sense of how you might use these. While all these resources are indeed on the internet in the sense that they are “online”, they are all credible, vetted and consist of reliable information. The Career Cruising database is a very useful tool for investigating careers, interests and self- improvement tools for employment and education goals. Teen Health is an incredible source of reliable information back by doctors and other well informed professionals. The Tumblebooks series of programs for children is one of my personal favourites. I have many times entertained my grandkids by having them listen Robert Munsch read his stories to them.

Career Cruising

To access this database, go to www.shelburnelibrary.ca -> Online resources -> Careers, jobs, and self improvment-> career cruising Find the perfect career path for you using this comprehensive database. Using this resource, you can search educational institutions, find job opportunities in your area, and learn about a variety of specific careers. This database even provides resume writing and interview tips! To search for the perfect career for your personality and interests, you will have to create a profile, outlining your interests and career goals. To do so, click “Explore my interests” in the left hand corner, click “matchmaker and skills”; a window will come up, click “create my plan”. Once created, you can take a career MatchMaking quiz to give you some suggested career paths that match your interests. Teens Health and Wellness To access this database, go to www.shelburnelibrary.ca -> online resources -> Careers, jobs, and self improvement -> Teen health and wellness. This database can answer any question you may have about teen health and wellness. Use this resource to find info on any topic including: the cost of owning your first car, how to handle losing a family member, and even how to start to eat organically! This database also contains a variety of beauty and health tips. No topic is off limits; get real answers and real advice to your questions about anything and everything!

Tumble Books

You can access this database by going to www.shelburnelibrary.ca / resourceschildren’s resource/ TumbleBookLibrary (Gr. K-3) This is a great resource for all children but focused on the reading level of Kindergarten-grade 3. There are a large variety of picture books, non-fiction books and chapter books that have great illustrations to go along with them. In the non-fiction and book section of the website the storybook is read aloud to the child while they follow along with the words on the screen. This is a great way to practice reading skills while having fun doing it. For more advance readers there are chapter books and graphic novels which you can read online as well. Some books you can read online include Toopy Binoo, Robert Munch books, and Nancy Drew.
