Canada Day will be over when you read this column. What a day for celebration; it is wonderful seeing our red and white flag on cars, on homes and on businesses, etc. Fireworks really add to the culminating enjoyment of the day. Here at the Library, work is going on full force as we start our summer programming with many new programs and activities for our children and some for our other patrons too.

Children`s Programs

TD Summer Reading Kick-Off took place at 10:30 a.m. last Saturday morning July 5. This was a time to register for the program, pick up the activity package, free CDRC swim tickets and more… More than 50 children registered on Saturday and more are coming in every day. Children can still register during the following week or so if you couldn’t make it on Saturday. Checking in on a weekly basis is at your convenience. We will be starting a new LEGO club on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for the younger children ages 4 – 7. The Wednesday Club for ages 8+ will continue at 3 p.m. but pickup time has been changed to 4:30 p.m. Lots of other new programs starting: Crafts, Special guest features etc. The Loom Club will continue on Thursday night but we will also be featuring some other programs so check out our web site and our Facebook page as well.

Library Literary Event – Special author launch, Kim Jai Sook Martin, July 13 at 2 p.m.

We are delighted to be able to have Jai talk to us about her experiences of Growing up in Korea and an Unexpected New Life in Canada. In her book, Obligations and Aspirations, Jai shares many experiences, memories and often heartfelt stories of the lives of many relatives and friends. It was a time of turbulent world affairs and we can read and hear some firsthand memories of these times. Please call us to register! The event is free but you must be registered. In further presenting our databases, you will find Novelist really helpful for your summer reading. You can access it when you check our catalogue because it tells you what other author you might like or what other books you might enjoy when you check out a book. So for example if you like Lee Child and you go to the Catalogue (Koha) to any of his books, click on one and then go to OPAC view. It will give you all the books in the Jack Reacher series and then suggest that you might also like, Barry Eisler, David Baldacci and Michael Connelly.

The other way to access is through our On-line Resources on our web site: NOVELIST: How to access: http://www.shelburnelibrary.ca – > Resources -> Online resources by subject -> Literature & Languages -> NoveList If you are struggling to decide what to read next, or you want to find books on a particular topic, and you can`t immediately talk to one of us or need more ideas, try out our NoveList database. This database contains thousands of fiction and non-fiction titles, and it can help find new reading materials that suit your preferences exactly. Describe the type of book you are looking for, for example: “World War II, mystery”, or “Coming-of-age, Canadian” and type it into the search bar. The database will generate a list of books that fit this description; it will also provide you with trustworthy reviews, and a list of “read-alikes” which are books that also match your described preferences. Once you have found the perfect book, call the library to see if we have it, or if we can get order it in for you!
