Primrose Park hosts Camp Day for The Cure

July 24, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Primrose Park is a unique camping experience where campers from all over the world become a community virtually overnight.

Because of this “family-feel”, many Shelburnites have a permanent homes at Primrose.

Conveniently located on Highway 10, Primrose Park allows camper to be transported into the world of camping without the long drive, ensuring the most vacation time possible.

Roni Travis, 19, one of the Travis family members who own and run the park, along with best friend, Taylor Cunningham, organized a fundraiser recently to aid in the fight against Cancer.

“Back in grade ten I lost my uncle to cancer and had a little fund raising event to help end the fight against cancer. I think we raised $500 then. So now, I thought I would open the camp to the public for the day, with the hope that I could make a bigger impact,” Travis told the Free Press. “The entire community and several small businesses helped to make the day possible and all proceeds will go the Canadian Cancer Society.”

The Canadian Cancer Society provided Primrose Park with balloons, signage, brochures, pins, and posters.

“Everyone involved has been so supportive, and I really want to thank everyone,” Travis said.

Travis and Cunningham, opened the park to the pubic, organized a barbeque, silent auction, door prizes, horseshoe, mini golf, tug of war, many other games for the kids, an early evening dance and finishing up with a bonfire. The girls covered every aspect of fun and entertainment inviting Patrick James Clark for live musical, entertainment. Clark recently released his first record, ‘Letters to Beatrice’. The girls are trying to raise as much money as possible and will be accepting donations in exchange for tickets and the chance to win beautiful pillows valued at $500, and will also be holding a bottle drive even after the Camp Day For The Cure is completed.

Travis, is a Fanshawe College student studying Fitness and Health Promotions, and Cunningham is at Carleton University studying Criminology and Criminal Justice. While home for summer break, these two are shining examples of the power young people have to make an impact on society when they are inspired.

“My grandma is a cancer survivor and this cause has always been close to my heart. Even some of our campers are fighters and survivors. I really appreciate the community for all the help and it’s so nice to know people do nice things,” said Travis.

“As Roni’s friend, I always assist in all her great ideas,” explained Cunningham, sadly reminding that almost everyone knows someone who has faced cancer.

“It’s the little things you can do every day to make a difference one event at a time!” a determined Travis explained.
