Shelburne Library news

October 8, 2014   ·   0 Comments

What a gorgeous day! A little cool but with all that sunshine who cares? It reminds me of autumn leaves, crisp apples, and colourful pumpkins and squash. It certainly would be nice to have this carry over to the Thanksgiving weekend! Just a reminder to come in and get some books before the weekend as we are closed this Saturday, Sunday, and Thanksgiving Monday.

More Library news
A Giant Book Sale is happening all this week: October 7 to 10 while the library is open. We will also be using our special donations for Book Baskets that sell so well at our Silent Auction which will be held November 29th this year. Last year, we had 35 baskets and they all sold!!
Silent Auction:November 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You should see some of the beautiful items we have received already for our Silent Auction. We are so appreciative for donations of articles for the sale. This is our main fundraiser of the year and it certainly helps with purchasing new books for our collection.
Our Collection
Have you noted all the new books arriving daily? These are our fall orders of new books and for us it seems like a huge precursor of Christmas as we open the books and exclaim over the great titles we have coming in. Speaking of which, I stayed up very late reading a delicious book, The hundred-foot Journey by Richard C.Morais. What a lovely story about family, suffering, and success. As the story unfolds, a young Indian boy rises to becomes a three-star chef in Paris. The descriptions of the culinary establishments, the rivalries and the food, of course, made this a stunning, not to be put down read – and I didn’t. It is a heartfelt story that examines many lives and pays tribute to the strength and dedication of family.
I also read Lee Child’s new book, Personal and I was not disappointed. Just when you think a writer has used up all possible story lines and plot, he surprises you. Jack Reacher is the target and the entire CIA, FBI and local forces weigh in heavily to both support him and use him as bait to capture the hit man. It is being catalogued at the moment and I know many folks are waiting for it….
And finally, another charming and romantic little book, A Wedding in Provence by Ellen Sussman. Of course, immediately, the title captivated me as I associate so many wonderful feelings and senses and colours with Provence. It is a second marriage for Olivia and that in itself is a story but the real development occurs when her daughters arrive to attend the wedding. Their lives are turned around in so many ways and for both of them it becomes a time for new beginnings and an opportunity to reflect on their lives and the influences that have shaped them. It was delightful and not without its challenges.
