Past and present staff members, local dignitaries and community members gathered at Shelburne Home Hardware, located at 725 Steeles St., last Thursday (Aug. 7) for a special event commemorating the 40-year anniversary.
“For 40 years, this store has been a staple and mainstay for a lot of people,” said Bill Gilliam, owner of Shelburne Home Hardware. “In our store, we believe that customers are number one and that our purpose is that we’re serving customer 100 per cent of the time. We do that, by leading by example and every single employee who has worked here, past and present, had done that.”
Shelburne Home Hardware opened its doors to the community in 1985, led by Ian Thackwray, then owner of Orangeville Home Hardware.
In 1990 the home improvement retailer was sold to Shelburne residents Murray and Andrea Fines, who would go on to own and operate the store for more than 20 years. One of the biggest changes to happen under the Fines’ tenure, came in 1995 when they chose to expand store space by building and moving to a new location in town. Shelburne Home Hardware continues to operate out of this location 30 years later.
After two decades of ownership, the Fines put the store up for sale and Shelburne Home Hardware was officially purchased by Bill and Carol Gilliam in 2012.
