Lots to do on local sports fields this summer

It’s time to pack away the video games and make sure the kids get outdoors for the summer.

The local sports scene in Shelburne has a wide variety of activities going on this summer that will keep children active while learning the discipline and cooperation needed to be part of a team.

A registration day was held recently at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex and most local sports clubs were there to sign up players for the coming season.

Representatives from Shelburne Minor Soccer, Baseball, Lacrosse, Fast Ball, golf, and Mansfield Minor Baseball were on hand to supply information and sign kids up for the season.

“Today is the central registration for all the summer sports,” explained Chris Wight of Shelburne Jr. Schooners Fastball.

“We start practices the first week of May and our games usually start after the May long weekend,” he said of the Leauge’s schedule. “We’re expecting to place ten to 12 kids on each team.”

As one of the most popular sports, Minor Soccer has already signed up a lot of kids and are expecting quite a few more to take advantage of the opportunity to join a team.

“Our first registration was a lot busier than it ever has been,” said Tricia Field of Shelburne Minor Soccer. “We have six divisions of players. All of our games will be taking place at Greenwood Park. Were’ hoping for around 400 players this year. We play four nights each week. We go from two- year-olds to 16-year-olds.”

There’s still to register for summer sports.

Clubs will again be back at the CDRC for two more chances to get signed up.

This Saturday, March 19, they will be there from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

The clubs will return for a final sign-up day on Thursday, April 21, from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Put away the electronic devices for the summer and get outdoors and take part in the activities that promote a healthy mind and body.
