They waited until the sixth inning to get it done, but one inning was all the Mansfield Senior Cubs needed to win their game over the Nobleton Cornhuskers on Wednesday, July 6.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the second inning when Jess Ragazzon dropped the ball to deep left field to bring in the first run.

The Cornhuskers tied the game in the top of the fourth with a double hit to centre field that brought in a single run.

The fourth inning saw the Cubs in scoring position with men on second and third base, but they couldn’t finish and the side retired.

Nobleton was in the lead in the top of the fifth, with a line-drive that bought enough time for a base runner to cross home plate to make it a 2-1 game.

After going with no runs in the fifth inning, the Cubs got the bats moving in the sixth starting with a single run home run from Tyler Linger that tied the game at two.

A double from Ragazzon put men on second and third. That was followed up by another double to centre field from Emerson Pendleton that brought in two Mansfield runs.

Next up, Adam Coe batted in another run followed by another base hit from Logan Wallace that made it a 6-2 game for the Mansfield squad.

Going through the batting order, Linger again brought in a runner from third base on a drive past the Nobleton shortstop.

The Mansfield team finished off the inning with a hit deep to left field that bought enough time for the third base runner to tag up and make it across the plate.

The final was a 9-2 game for the Cubs.

“Tyler (Linger) has always been a big part of our team since he gets the bats going,” said Cubs shortstop Adam Coe. “We usually follow that. He got the big hit and we carried it on in the next inning. We batted through in that order. We’re not having the greatest year but we keep the spirits up on the bench and try to win some more games. These are the games we have to win. We know we’re at the bottom so, to climb our way up, we have to beat the teams that are closest to us.”

Good batting was one part of the game, but the Cubs also played a solid defensive effort.

Nobleton was struggling on the diamond and had several errors that cost them.

“Our defence is always pretty tight,” Coe said. “The odd time you get a bounce here and there but we know our guys and where they play. It’s good to see them come out and have a good game.”

The Cubs will be back on the diamond in Mansfield on Sunday, July 17, to host the Midland Indians.

Game time is 7.30 p.m.
