Shelburne celebrated arts and culture this past weekend with local food, art and entertainers.

As a first time event for Shelburne, Main Street locations participating in the festivities saw fair crowds, while some of the more out-of-the-way events did not have as many visitors as hoped.

The event-filled weekend has run for seven years across the country in celebration of Canadian culture.

It was obvious that those who did come out for the new Shelburne event were very enthusiastic with what the Culture Days Committee had planned. Folks enjoyed free tastes of food and beverages, as well as music and art at most locations.

Sharon Grant, who led the committee brought the idea to the Shelburne Business Improvement Association (BIA) and the idea gave way to the creation of “Savour Shelburne” to celebrate Shelburne’s culture in food, drink and art.

Savour Shelburne, the main event of the weekend, took place Friday night between 5 and 9 p.m. when many stores in Shelburne were closed. Residents strolled from event to event enjoying meeting store owners and browsing where the events were located.

The night’s events included, among many things, beer and cider tasting at the LCBO and perogies and butter tarts at Jelly Cafe.

At the Jelly, Greg Holmes of Holmes’ Music Store and Appliances was joined on guitar by Masimo Bosco from Rome, Italy. Mr. Bosco and his wife were visiting her brother Chris, and his wife Lila Kotwas, owners of the popular café, and lent their hands to the new event.

Despite chilly temperatures, samples of Gelato ice cream went fast at the new Main Street restaurant “Carmie’s Kitchen”, currently under renovation.

Guests had a chance to meet the new owners Joe and Carmela Palkowski, who will be opening a sit down Italian restaurant serving Italian dishes.

Young people with an interest in the Canadian music industry had a chance to meet David Record of Metal Works Studios, an award winning Hip Hop artist, and an open-mic session with Troupe-Adore in the art gallery at Trinity United Church gave interested singers and musicians a chance to perform live.

All in all, a great start to another community event for Shelburne.
