The weekend snowfall over the weekend kept OPP officers were busy investigating 22 minor collisions throughout the area.
Many of these collisions occurred by drivers not operating vehicles according to changing weather conditions.
Winter Driving tips from the Ministry of Transportation:
Stay alert: Weather conditions can change quickly, placing extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills. Keep your focus on the road and on other vehicles. Eliminate all distractions and make sure you are well rested.
Slow down: Always drive according to weather conditions. Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to avoid having to brake suddenly on a slippery surface.
Stay in control: Make sure you know how to handle your vehicle in all weather conditions.
Do a winter maintenance check on your vehicle to prepare for the winter conditions.
This should include:
• inspecting tires
• replacing worn windshield wipers
• Pre-winter tune-up.by qualified mechanic.
A winter survival kit should include:
• A snow brush/ice scrapper.
• Booster cables
• Shovel
• Candles with matches
• Warm jacket mitts/gloves and boots
• Blanket or sleeping bag
• Fully charged cell phone with you in the event you find yourself stranded with a vehicle break down.
Make sure you let your family are aware of where you are going should you need to travel and your planned route.
