Minor hockey is in full swing around the region giving players several months of games before playoffs.
The Shelburne Wolves U13 rep team is just getting started with two games behind them including their first win on Saturday, Oct. 22 on home ice at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.
The Wolves were up again the Oro Thunder in an afternoon game.
After playing to a 3-3 tie in the third period, the Wolves got the go-head goal to lead, then another goal for some insurance with less than a minute remaining on the clock for a 5-3 win.
This is the first year since the pandemic that hockey is expected to play a full schedule. Last season all hockey was paused for several weeks in the middle of winter.
“They’re really excited about being back for routine practices and getting a lot of ice time,” said Wolves U13 head coach, Andrew Gee. “They’re also doing a lot of dry land training. We’re just starting out. We’re a small team because we haven’t got many kids in this age group, so we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re a small team with only 10 skaters. Most of the teams we play have 15 skaters.”
There have been fewer players in many leagues over the past couple of seasons. During the pandemic, and no ice time available, many players went on to new interests and did not return to the sport.
Because of that, hockey has been in a rebuilding process as it attracts new players to the sport.
“It’s good to see things getting back to normal,” Andrews said. “These kids need to get back out on the ice and be active. We’ve got three different pockets of kids on the team. There are some kids that are first-year players, and some kids that are in their second year. We’re doing some dry land training at the high school on the track. That’s going to help them gel together as a team.”
The Wolves U13 rep team are sponsored by Crewson Insurance Brokers, Shelburne Family Chiropractic, Go With Crowe Real Estate, and Ken Bennington realtor.
The Wolves U13 rep team will play their next game on the road when the travel to Elmvale to take on the Coyotes on Nov. 4.
