The Shelburne Wolves Midget rep team are tied at one in their final OMHA series against the Port Dover Pirates.
The Wolves lost game one of the series 5–4 on Friday (Mar. 13) on home ice at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex after giving up a lead and going into overtime.
The Wolves opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the first period of game one.
Port Dover tied it up early in the second period but again the Wolves were ahead when they notched a goal at the four and a-half minute mark into the period.
The real battle took place in the final period when the Pirates scored to again make it a tie game.
Fighting back, the Wolves took a two goal lead including a final goal with 2:17 left on the clock and it looked like Shelburne had the game wrapped up. But in hockey, it’s never over until the buzzer rings.
Port Dover scored goal number three with just over a minute remaining then got the tie goal with seconds left when they pulled the goalie and put the extra attacker on the ice to force the game into overtime.
The Pirates took the game scoring at two minutes into the overtime period to lead the series after one game.
“We just fell away from our game,” said Wolves forward Darren Taylor. “We just have to get back at it. We lost our intensity. We were still out there, we just had some tough breaks. We’re going to keep the heads up high and come back out on Sunday.”
They did just that. The squad travelled to Port Dover on Sunday, and left with a 3–1 win to tie the series at one.
The series will return to Shelburne this weekend with game three of the series getting underway at the Recreation Complex at 8:30 p.m.
The teams will head back to Port Dover on Sunday, March 22, for game four of the series.
