Expressing “sympathy” in graffiti

475 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 from Centennial Hylands, Hyland Heights, Glenbrook, and Primrose Elementary Schools attended the inaugural “Be the Best You Can Be” day, May 14th at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Centre in Shelburne. Students are seen here with inspirational YouTube speaker Josh Yandt “The Doorman” (far left) who captivated the young audience by relating his experiences with bullying. Students were “entertained, informed and enlightened” by entertainers and speakers throughout the day, who encouraged them to strive to be their best person in all that they do. Interactive activities such as dance and art brought the event to life and the impressive line up of speakers included NHL’s Aaron Downey and Olympian Brian Price. The day was inspired by Tara Bernard-McCabe, Child and Youth Counsellor at Hyland Heights and Glenbrook Elementary Schools in Shelburne. Tara had travelled with the students to “Me to We” days in Kitchener for several years and wanted to recreate this great learning experience in Shelburne. Tara hopes that students will get the message that their support begins “right here at home.”
