Cubs behind after game one of playoffs

The North Dufferin Baseball League playoffs are underway.
In round one action the Mansfield Cubs are up against the New Lowell Knights.
Game one of the series got underway in Mansfield on Wednesday, August 5, with a 6:15 p.m. start.
It didn’t take long for the scoreboard to get it’s first numbers when the Knights scored two runs in their opening at-bat.
New Lowell made it three in the second inning of a hit that bounced off the centre field fence for a double and drove in another run.
The big inning was the fourth when New Lowell loaded the bases and Sean Thompson dropped one over the right field fence for a grand slam home run.
That was all the scoring for the night and New Lowell left with a 6–0 win to lead the series 1–0.
The Cubs played a good game and got a lot of hits but managed to place those long balls right into the laps of Knight’s fielders.
That and the fact that the New Lowell team played a very solid defensive game shut down the Cubs for much of the play.
“They’re number one in the League for a reason,” said Cubs coach Jess Ragazzon referring to the Knights defensive posturing. “They’re a pretty good defensive team for sure. We’ve just got to forget about today’s game and just start to hit the ball. It’s just one of those things. We’ll start hitting into the holes. Tomorrow’s a new game and hopefully we’ll be a bit more prepared.”
The Cubs knew they were up against a tough team. The Knights finished the regular season in first place with a 20–3–3 record, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be beat.
The Cubs had a solid season and produced some good results and have both a strong defence and offence.
The first round series is set for a best of three or first to six points. A win is worth two points and tie is good for a single point.
The Cubs were scheduled to play the next two games on the New Lowell diamond and the results will be in the next edition of the Free Press.
