Staff Pick of the Week: Britt’s Pick—The Poppy Wars by R.F. Kuang

An epic historical military fantasy, inspired by the violent history of China’s 20th century, follows the efforts of an unexpected, dark-skinned war orphan. Her goal is to obtain an education at Nikan’s most elite military school in spite of prejudice and the challenges of her lethal shaman skills. These skills raise her awareness about the existence of gods and the imminence of war.

Why Britt recommends this book: For readers like me who love a lengthy series, this could be a new favourite.

Our protagonist, Rin, has an immense desire for vengeance and a true gift for shamanism. Her gifts reveal that the gods are still alive, and ultimately entangles her with them. It also has a hidden magic element, which will please seasoned fantasy readers!

This is grim story set against a reimagined and bloody Second Sino-Japanese war; it hits hard from the beginning and doesn’t stop until the end. Lucky for us, there are 2 more after this, so we can stay in the setting a little longer!
