Shelburne Library news

October 5, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Sunday was such a gorgeous day so we were really pleased that a dedicated and interested group of library patrons enjoyed several hours of listening to author Barbara Kyle talk about her books in the Thornleigh Saga. Her research and her insight into the Tudor era brought this time period to life for the audience. It was fascinating to hear about the rivalries, the politics, the religious issues and the personal glimpses into the lives of the two Queens. Barbara also drew into her talk, the significant Opera, Maria Stuarda by Donizetti, and also the play, Mary Stuart which is on at Stratford this summer.  We spent the next while socializing and talking to Barbara about her work. It was a pleasant time for her as well to catch up with old friends and acquaintances.

Children’s Programs: Toddler’s Storytime is starting on Tuesday, October 8th at 10:30 a.m. for babies up to 2 years. This is a terrific opportunity for interactive play, songs and stories for the little ones. Give us a call to register at 519-925-2168. As usual, our regular Storytime is held on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

School Visits and Orientation: Very shortly, we will be hosting Grades 2 and 3 students from Glenbrooke Public School at our library. This is a wonderful opportunity for these youngsters to be introduced to all the resources we have here for them. The computer reading and learning programs, colourful and engaging books and in addition they will receive their own library card. Kindergarten children from Hyland Heights will also be visiting us for stories, songs, and crafts and to learn about our library. Many of these children have been here with their parents in the past but we have many new families and we want to welcome them.

Seniors Programs: Cathy Earle, our volunteer is here today making her selections for the residents of Dufferin Oaks and Shelburne Residence. Cathy takes a great deal of care working with me to select the books and other materials to meet the individual interests and likes of our patrons at these two facilities. I am calling all our at-home patrons to whom we have brought books to update their requests and start delivering to them for October.

We have a substantial number of new Large Print books on order, new Talking books and many regular print books as well. We have ordered all the new popular authors, Lee Child, J.A. Jance, Nora Roberts etc., some new ones to try out and also some very interesting new non-fiction books as well. They will start arriving over the next few weeks so do check our website! It will be like opening Christmas presents for us when the boxes arrive. One book you won’t have to wait until then is John Riley’s new book, The Once and Future Great Lakes Country: An Ecological History. John very kindly presented us with a copy this week and inscribed it with thanks for the assistance we gave him in his research. He will be speaking here at our Library Literary Event, Off the Page on Sunday, November 17th at 2 p.m.
