Shelburne residents will have the opportunity to hear directly from municipal election candidates and put their questions to those seeking office during an all-candidates forum at the Shelburne Legion on Oct. 13.
The Municipal Elections All Candidates Meeting will take place at the Shelburne Legion, located at 203 William St., with doors opening at 6 p.m. The formal meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to run until approximately 9:35 p.m., followed by refreshments and a meet-and-greet with candidates. The meeting hall will close at 10 p.m.
The forum is being hosted, organized and paid for by Shelburne residents Jeff McLean and Mike Fazackerley.
The event will give candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves, outline their platforms, and respond directly to questions from community members.
Candidates are required to arrive before the meeting to provide their biographies, review the format and procedures, and participate in a draw that will determine the order in which they speak.
The moderator will introduce candidates using their submitted biographies before candidates deliver three-minute opening statements and platform introductions.
The main question-and-answer portion of the evening is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:05 p.m. Each candidate will receive up to one-and-a-half minutes to answer questions, with an additional minute potentially available for follow-up questions or responses to another candidate’s remarks at the moderator’s discretion.
Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions directly. Questions will not be screened in advance, although the moderator and organizers will determine whether a question is appropriate for the forum. Residents wishing to participate must provide their first name and address, and only people who live or own a business within the Shelburne election boundary will be permitted to ask questions.
Residents can also submit questions ahead of the meeting to the organizers at mike.fazackerley@matthewscott.com or shelburneelectionforum@gmail.com.
Questions can be submitted in writing and may be directed toward a particular candidate for the moderator to ask during the audience question period.
The organizers have established a series of rules intended to keep the forum focused and non-partisan. Campaign banners, signs and other campaign paraphernalia will not be permitted inside the Legion. Candidates will have designated areas to display materials, while audience members are expected to remain courteous and avoid inflammatory statements or personal attacks.
The moderator will have the authority to enforce the rules throughout the evening.
Candidates will be expected to speak only when it is their turn and to respect the time limits, while audience members will have 30 seconds to ask each question. A timekeeper will signal candidates when their allotted time ends.
Following the question-and-answer period, candidates will have two minutes each to deliver closing remarks.
The moderator will then conclude the formal portion of the meeting before refreshments and a meet-and-greet provide residents with another opportunity to speak with candidates.
With the municipal election approaching, the forum will give Shelburne voters a chance to compare candidates, hear their priorities and raise questions about the issues that matter to the community before casting their ballots.
