Redwings tie it up but lose in third period

The Shelburne Redwings played one of their strongest games so far this season coming back from a two goal deficit in the first period to tie the game and make it a battle in the final twenty minutes.

The visiting Rama Aces opened the scoring in the fist period with just .32 seconds on the clock the followed up with a second goal just under four minutes later.

The Redwings have struggled this season when they are down a couple of goals, but this time the squad pulled it together scoring early in the second period to tie the game.

Both Redwings goals came from Semple Terrence.

Going into the final twenty minutes, Rama took the lead when they scored at 2:51 into the frame then followed up with two more to widen the gap and end the game.

Shelburne’s Vladislav Zborshchik notched a final Redwings goal with :23 seconds left on the clock, but it was too late to make any difference in the outcome of the game.

“It was a pretty even game in the first two periods, but the guys got tired – they didn’t have enough energy,” said Redwings coach Nikita Vasilyev. “We working on it, we will show the guys video of their mistakes. We have a couple of guys we sent home because it just wasn’t working out, but we’ve got new players coming.”

Despite the loss the team seems to be gelling as a unit and executed some good plays on the ice.

“After the first period, we told them they have to work hard, everybody try hard and pick it up,” Vasilyev said.

The Greater Metro Hockey League has three teams battling for the top spot in the early going.

After seven games, the Bradford Bulls, South Muskoka Shield, and Temiscaming Titans are separated by a single point.

The Redwings will return to home ice at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne this Friday (Oct. 11) to host the Tamiscaming Titans.

The puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
