Royals battle Centre Wellington

The Centre Dufferin District High School Royals played well, but came up short in their game against Centre Wellington at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Tuesday, December 9.
The Royals knew they were up against a tough rival with the Centre Wellington team being tied for first place in the Division 4/10 standings and undefeated for the season.
The visitors opened the scoring in the first period with a shot that hit the goalie’s pad, bounced, and dribbled over the goal line.
Centre Wellington picked up two more goals – one on a powerplay – and a third just 30 seconds later to lead 3–0 going into the second period.
A single in the second frame made it a 4–0 game.
The Centre Wellington team played a highly defensive game crowding the net when ever the Royals came within shooting distance making it tough for the CDDHS offence to get through.
Royals defence played a solid three periods keeping the Wellington team pinned to the outside, but a few breakdowns allowed the visitors to the inside keeping CDDHS goalie Caleb Best busy for most of the game.
The Royals got on the scoreboard with a single in the third period to end the game 5–1.
“They’re on of the best teams in the league and we’re in a rebuilding stage right now,” Said Royals goalie Caleb Best. “We’re working on rebuilding and getting our strategies going, we’re working on it in practice.”
Going up against top team, Best said his personal strategy is to take the game in stride without over thinking it.
“I decided to relax and try not to get flustered. I don’t want to get my mind all rattled. I try to keep calm about everything because I knew they were going to be tough. They’ve got a lot of super (Grade) 12’s and 12’s on their team.”
The Royals will have an away game on Thursday, January 8, at Westside Secondary School in Orangeville.
They return to home ice on January 13, to host Orangeville District Secondary School.
Game time is 2 p.m.
