The Shelburne Senior A Muskies dropped their first round robin playoff game against the Tilsonburg Thunder taking a 5-4 loss on Sunday, February 14, in a game that they let slip away in the second period.
The Muskies took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period when they scored three powerplay goals with Santino DeFlorfio opened the scoring on an assist from Ryan Halbych.
Halbych scored the second goal, taking the feed from Nate King at the 4:47 mark.
The Thunder scored a shorthanded marker to close the gap 30 seconds later only to see the Muskies respond back again to regain the two goal lead with 3:57 left in the period.
Tyler Hogan scored Muskies’ goal number three on an assist from King.
The Muskies were out-shot on the period 16-13.
The Muskies stopped skating for the middle period and took four straight penalties on top that cost them their lead and ultimately the win as the Thunder scored three straight powerplay goals to take the lead 4-3.
The Muskies got one back to tie the score at four with Nick Hodgson scoring from Tyler Hogan and Josh Hickey.
However, the Thunder got what would be the game winner with 4:10 left in the second period to regain the lead at 5-4.
The Shelburne squad was outshot 14-4 in a period controlled by the Tilsonburg team.
The third saw the Muskies get back on their game controlling the final period and out-shooting the Tillsonburg side 13-3.
They couldn’t find the back and had to settle for a 5-4 loss.
Eddie Davey played well in net for the Muskies stopping 28 of the 33 shots that came his way while the Shelburne team fired 30 at the Thunder on the night.
The Muskies continue their round robin playoffs on Friday, February 19, night at home at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex when the Lucknow Lancers come to town for 8.45 p.m. start.
On Sunday, February 21, the Muskies travel to Milverton to take on the Drives at 2.30 p.m.
