The Shelburne Wolves Peewee LL1 hosted the Elmvale Coyotes during round robin playoff action at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Saturday, February 27.
It was a tight battle between the two squads as playoff fury kept both teams on top of their game.
The Wolves found themselves trailing early in the game when the Coyotes scored the opening goal early in the first period, then followed up with a second marker that hit goalie TJ Wilson’s stick and popped up high and landed in the net.
The Wolves played a solid second period but were behind the eight-ball when Elmvale scored two more to make it a 4-0 game with a period-and-a-half still to go.
The Coyotes managed to hit the back of the net again to lead by five with one period left to go.
Shelburne worked hard on offence during the third period and it paid off when forward Andrew Bruce scored early in the final frame to avoid the shut-out.
The Wolves regrouped and headed back out to see if they could close the gap but the Elmvale defence did good work at stopping the Shelburne squad from putting any more numbers on the scoreboard and the Wolves had to settle for a 5-1 loss.
“We had a couple of good chances up there,” said Wolves defenceman Kaleb Martin after Saturday’s game. “Andrew (Bruce) got a really nice goal. We needed to get a bit more offence going and we should have stopped a couple of goals that went in today. We need to play a bit more defensively.”
As the playoffs continue, the Wolves Peewees’ next game will be against the Georgian Shores Lightning.
