The Mansfield Sr. Cubs are still looking for their first win of the season after hosting a double header against the Bolton Brewers on Sunday, June 3, in Mansfield.

The Brewers arrived at the diamond as an undefeated team and are currently in first place in the League.

The Bolton team got off to a solid start in the first game of the day that got underway at 3:00 p.m., scoring three runs in the first inning.

The Brewers managed to keep scoring off some steady hitting including a three run home run in the fifth inning from Brett Chater.

Defensively the Cubs played a good game, but the Brewers managed to hit to all the right places.

The game was called after the fifth inning with an 11-0 loss for the Cubs.

With the late spring this year many teams never really got as much pre-season practice that they had hoped for.

“It’s tough on the bodies, it’s tough on the arms,” said Cubs coach Emerson Pendleton. “It took us a while to get our gloves going but it’s starting to catch up now. We’re taking good at-bats and the bat speed is coming up now.”

The teams took a break before heading out for the second game of the day.

“We try to stay loose, stay in the game. They’re (Bolton) a really good team. That pitcher was amazing – the best I’ve seen all year. The score was a little out of hand but we kept it close. We made the outs that we had to and stayed with them.”

Playing a double header means keeping an eye on available pitchers.

“We definitely have to manage the pitching,” Pendleton said. “We have that in mind. That’s why we’re saving some guys for this game. We have to take the mentality of knowing who’s pitching and giving them the heads up so they how to prepare and stay with it. We re-set the clock and get ready for this game.”

The Cubs came up short in the second game of the day and had to settle for a loss.

The Cubs will return to the Mansfield diamond on Sunday, June 10, when they will host the Aurora Jays.

Game time is 5:00 p.m.
