The Mansfield Junior Cubs are holding on to first place in the North Dufferin Baseball League after a successful week that saw them win two more games.
The Cubs hosted the Orangeville Bengals on Wednesday (June 6) night at the Mansfield diamond. It was supposed to be an O-ville home game but they had trouble securing a diamond and the teams made the switch to Mansfield.
The Cubs started off strong scoring twice in the fist inning then taking a 4-3 lead by the end of the third frame.
The Mansfield squad took a four run lead in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases and got a couple of runs when batters were walked.
A hit brought in a run on a single and the Cubs again walked in a run before the inning ended.
The Cubs finished off the night with a strong final inning when the got the bats moving late in the game and scored three runs in the final inning while shutting down the Bengals final at-bat to win the game 10-3.
It was win number eight for the Mansfield team.
“It was a good game, we kept at the bats and not too many errors,” summed up Cubs pitcher Kashtin Winchester. “The win places us in a good spot for the season.”
The Cubs were again up against the Bengals two nights later when they travelled to Orangeville. They left he diamond with a 7-3, and improved their record to 8-1 for the season. The place them eight points ahead of the second place Ivy Blues in the standings.
The Cubs will back at their home diamond in Mansfield on Monday, June 24, when they will host the Midland Twins.
Game time is 5:00 p.m.
