They may be small but he Shelburne Vets Paperweight division players put a lot of energy into their games.
The local house league held a season end tournament on Monday, June 25, to give the players a final chance to show their skills and battle it out for the top spot in the league.
The Paperweights are the youngest players in the Vets organization and their season got underway back in mid April.
“This is the wrap-up of our house league paperweight program,” explained Shelburne Vets executive member, Melissa Moylan. “They started playing in mid April. We have soft paperweights who are three and four years old and the paperweights are five and six years old. We have four teams. The kids learn the game, this is when they start and they love it. Tonight we’re celebrating a great season and they are playing among themselves in a little mini tournament. We’ll have a championship team tonight.”
Six year-old Easton Brown is a veteran player now in his fourth season with the Vets.
“This is my fourth season. I can play with my friends. It’s fun to get goals,” Easton said of why he likes playing lacrosse.
As a defenceman, Easton said his job is to “stand at the net and when someone comes at you you’re supposed to stick check them when they come near you.”
Easton, like many players, even at the paperweight level, are already thinking in the future and he said he plans to continue with the sport and move on to the junior level some day.
The Vets organization helps kids learn the game and many go on to play at the rep level.
The Paperweight tournament was sponsored by several local businesses including their tournament sponsor,Shelburne Home Hardware and Building Centre, Shelburne Family Chiropractic, Metz Home’s and Design, and Shelburne TD Canada Trust.
