With summer quickly fleeting, the moment Shelburne Red Wing Hockey fans can barely wait for is the moment the season begins again and the wait is almost over. September marks the fourth year Shelburne will welcome kids from Russia, Moscow, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Latvia and many countries as they become members of the Shelburne Red Wings and other teams for the season.
No small feat for these youngsters as the arduous trip to Canada is gratified by the amazing Canadian experience once these youngsters arrive as many of them have not experienced diverse Canadian languages, Canadian winter and Christmas, especially.
“These kids have a wonderful experience being billeted, learning English, seeing Canada, making friends on the team, becoming part of families they stay with and it’s really a great learning experience for us also. I’ve billeted for four years now. I’m really looking forward to this season and a fresh new squad,” explained Leslie Way, Director of Operations for the Shelburne Red Wings. “We are still looking for three billeting families and a Canadian Hockey Coach. Anyone interested can contact me.”
Almost seventeen year old, Storm Evans is the first local young man to join the Shelburne Red Wing Team and he encourages others to join. Evans points out that playing for the Shelburne Red Wings gives him an opportunity to play hockey and is his only option to take advantage of if he wants to stay in the game.
The season runs from September to March and home games will be each Friday night at 8:30 p.m. There are 16 teams in all and there are a total of 25 kids on the Shelburne Squad.
With the new arrivals participating in a hockey camp until the season starts, the season itself promises to be action packed, laced with skill and determination, exciting and even humbling as owner of the Shelburne Red Wings, Igor Vasilyev is largely responsible for bringing countries together through the game that says it all and means everything Canadian to so many. It’s about the game!
