The 2013 Fair a success, now it’s prep time to 2014

Despite last weekend’s chill, the 3-day Shelburne Fall Fair is being viewed as a great success, especially from an attendance perspective.

Sue Peterson of the Fair Board said there was “a great turnout as far as attendance,” and “the Demolition Derby was a huge success with three heats of 4 cylinder cars, a heat of 8 cylinder cars and a heat of trucks.”

Some spectators thought there were fewer vehicles entered in the classic car show event Sunday than there had been in previous years, but Ms. Peterson said there were approximately 38 – and Sunday was a chilly day with a threat of rain.

A complete list of all winners was not immediately available from all events and displays, but there were outstanding indoor displays of baking, quilts, vegetables, school entries, and group entries.

“All our vendors made it a great inside display. We had dance shows, karate shows and live entertainment throughout the weekend,” Ms. Peterson said.

As always, Friday night’s opening included the selection of Fair Ambassadors. Alice Whyte is the new Senior Ambassador, and Emma Holmes the Junior.

Not all spectators would have known, but may have guessed, that they were watching Shelburne’s own award-winning and internationally competing dancers in the presentations by “Turn it Out.”

“Our dancers have competed locally and in the United States as well as on the Canadian Show dance team in Germany,” said dance studio owner Serena Bryan in response to a query about the troupe that performed Sunday.

Sunday’s dancers, she said, were of ages 7 to 17 and were from the studio’s “competitive” class.

“We offer jazz, tap, ballet, acro, musical theatre, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop and zumba for ages 2 to adult, at Recreational and Competitive levels.”

Serena, herself, has been a dancer for 25 years and has been “a part of the Canadian tap and show dance team competing in Germany, Canada and United States, winning many awards including top soloist,” Serena Bryan said.

Getting to the youngest of competitors at the Fair, Janice Piper said there were 15 entries in the 4-event Baby Contest.

These were the winners of each category, along with their mothers:

Best Costume, Zoe Macdonald with mom Lyndsay; Largest Eyelashes, Jocelyn Lynch with mom Joanna; Biggest Eyes, Heike Moyer with mom Melanie; and Chubby Cheeks, Savaya Squirrell-Taggart with mom Shelby.

In other areas, Ms. Peterson said all the livestock shows – cattle, sheep and pig shows – went well and the horse pulls were “very well attended.”

Now, with the 2013 Fair out of the way, “the Shelburne District Agriculture Society will start in October planning next year’s events,” said Ms. Peterson.
