Chick Days at Sawyers Feed Mill

They are only a day old when they arrive, they come in different colors, are cute and fluffy and they do not stay long before going to their new homes. Yes, September 13th was the last ‘Chick Day’ of this year’s busy season at Sawyers Feed Mill Ltd.

A growing trend in today’s health conscious society is the raising of chickens. More and more people are getting back to nature and raising chickens for both eggs and meat. Many choose to take advantage of locally famous Sawyers Feed Mill’s Chick Days. Sawyers offer comprehensive packages for ordering chicks where types and prices are explained. The season runs from April through to September and baby Ducks as well as baby Geese and baby Turkey are also available upon request.

For those concerned about raising organic chicks, Sawyers offers organic feed. It’s entirely possible to have generations of chicks fed only organic feed which is a tremendous comfort for those who have a preference.

Featured in the accompanying photograph are three different colored types of chicks and while the yellow are raised for meat, the red and black will be raised for laying eggs. For those who are unfamiliar with chick terminology, chicks that will grow up to lay eggs are called Lay Hens, female chicks are called Pullets and male are called Cockerel.

Owner of Sawyers Feed Mill Ltd., Marion Sawyers and daughter, Theresa Steele have been facilitating this program for years. According to Steele, a laying chick can take up to five months to start laying eggs and in three months, meat chicks will be ready for processing. For those families interested in agriculture and teaching their children about farming, chickens are an attractive place to start an education especially with a short five month investment before eggs arrive.
