Wolves Bantam LL1 advance to final with 3–1 win over Midland

The Shelburne Wolves Bantam LL1 team earned their place in the final series with a 3–1 win over Midland the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Saturday.

It was a tough game with the Wolves leading 2–1 in the third period. After playing to a 1–1 tie in the second period, the teams went to the dressing room during the flood and prepared for a final showdown in the final 20 minutes of play. Shelburne got the edge and the lead with goal number two.

A final empty net goal gave the squad some insurance and they managed to hold off the Midland attackers to take the win.

“This was a big, huge game for us,” Said head coach Shawn Cavey. “The winner of this game will go onto the finals. So with our win we will go on to the final against Wasaga Beach for the A division local league.”

It has been a long season for the Bantams in a year that saw them steadily improve every time they stepped on the ice.

Overall they had a good season finishing with a number two place in both the standings and the playoff round.

The playoffs were structured in a round-robin format that provided a gruelling schedule that meant teams would rotate around, sometimes meeting other teams twice in the playoffs.

“The team we are going to be facing in the finals – Wasaga Beach – we had a really close game with them that we lost 3–2, it was very close, and that’s the team we will be facing,” Cavey explained.

Wasaga will get home ice advantage to start the playoff series.

The series schedule had not yet been determined as of press time. After the final series, the Bantams will get a chance to play one more time when they travel to Buffalo, New York, to play in the Pepsi Buffalo tournament on March 21. Several Shelburne teams will be making the trip to Buffalo in what is a multi-division annual tournament.
