Junior Schooners bring fastball back to Shelburne – registrations underway for 2014 season

It’s been a few years since fastball at the minor level has been played in Shelburne.

A new club – the Shelburne Junior Schooners – will be bringing minor league fastball to town this season.

The Club will play in the Bluewater District Minor Softball League and host home games on Wednesday nights at Hyland Park in Shelburne.

“I’ve been working on it for the past year and polling people to see how much interest there is,” Said Club president Chris Wight. “We’ll play in the Bluewater League. We’ll be the tenth team.”

The Bluewater League has teams from around the region.

“I’d like to field nine to ten teams and that would give us a team in every division, but if we can get three teams in the first season that would be great,” Wight said.

The league has divisions from t-ball right up to the Bantam level.

The fact that there is travel involved to other towns, Wight said, “brings more of a team spirit when you travel to other towns and play kids you don’t know.”

It is a co-ed league open to both boys and girls. Currently the League has around 40 per cent female players.

With ten divisions, players will be competing against kid’s very close in age meaning the level of competition will be on a level playing field.

The season will get underway with practice in May and League play beginning in June and running through to the Labour Day long weekend in September.

Registration is ongoing with a couple of special dates to remember.

On March 22, the Club will host registration at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex. They will again be taking registration on April 5, at the Town Pharmacy.
