Junior C Vets open with a win

They knew a strong opening would make the difference and the Caravaggio IDA Junior C Vets did just that – they led the first period of their home opener against the Six Nations Warriors 5–0 when the buzzer sounded to end the frame.

The Friday night game was the first one of the season for the local squad.

After the opening salvo that placed the Vets firmly in the lead, the let their foot off the gas in the second period allowing the Six Nations squad to challenge by scoring four goals to Shelburne’s two.

They returned to a good offensive play in the final period notching two more to stay ahead and leave the arena with their first win of the season.

“We didn’t know what to expect. It was their (Six Nations) first league game,” Said Vets head coach Mark Early. “We told our guys to be ready for them and they came out flying.”

This is the first season that Six Nations has had a team in the Junior C loop, but they have been a powerhouse organization at the A and B levels, and because of that strong record, it assumed by many that a C team would also do well. “They (the Vets) came out fast and came out hard and it showed on the floor,” Early said.

While admitting he thought the Six Nations would be good, he also said he expects not less of his own team.

“We told them that this Six Nations team would be near the top at the end of the year, but hopefully we are too. That was what we wanted to show them – that we are going to be the team to beat this year.”

The two teams played again the following day (Saturday May 10) at Six Nations, but this time the Warriors came out on top with an 8–5 win after stealing a Shelburne 3–0 lead and scoring five goals in the second period.

Four more Warriors goals in the final twenty minute sealed the deal for the Six Nations win. The Vets will be in Oakville on Thursday, May 15, with an 8 p.m. start.

They return to the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex the following night, Friday, May 15, to host the Caledon Bandits. Game time is 8 p.m.
