Teamworks Dufferin offers a unique summer camp for special needs children

July 24, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Teamworks Dufferin offers programs that focus on ‘abilities’ not ‘disabilities’. Antje van Dipten runs the programs and the summer camp is especially geared for fun, building relationships, forever friendships and offers life experience for those living with Autism, and special needs.

“The camp began in 2000 in Hockley Highlands and is now serving a 100km radius for autistic kids and kids with special needs. We meet at Mono Plaza where the Teamworks Dufferin school bus picks up the kids and take them for the day to a series of great activities. We even meet once a month for parents breakfast meeting where parents can network. We are working to become a charitable organization but now are supported by fundraisers and by the parents. That money goes towards staff, gas for the bus, and the many activities we enjoy,” commented van Dipten, “The summer camp is now called Zachary’s Camp in tribute to one of our Campers and Zachary’s Camp is not restricted to just younger children. We’ve been running for so long, many children have grown up with us over the years. Some enjoy the camp so much, they return to help out now that they are older.”

A quick visit to the Teamwork Dufferin website reveals the incredible care and attention payed to certain activities that are planned.

“When we say camp, we mean a real camp. We travel, go to Wasaga Beach, visit museums, play ball hockey, hiking, canoeing, and truly provide a great day camp experience,” revealed van Dipten.

On Saturday, July 19th, volunteers held a fundraiser for Zachary’s Camp and hoped to bring some awareness to their incredible programs.

Parents who prefer to attend along with their child may do so as van Dipten’s primary focus is respect in the hopes everyone can focus on the kids’ enjoyment.
