Shelburne residents will have an opportunity to come together for learning, reflection and community building on Sept. 30 as Active Lives Canada hosts an Every Child Matters Community Day at Fiddle Park.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Fiddle Park and is being held in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Throughout the day, Active Lives Canada participants, families, staff and community members will take part in a variety of accessible activities centred around learning, land, and water.

Activities will include games, art, nature-based programming and opportunities for participants to reflect on the history and continuing impacts of the residential school system.

The core event of the day will be the Peace Garden Ceremony and Every Child Matters flag raising, scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon. Representatives from the Town of Shelburne, including municipal leaders and staff, have been invited to join Active Lives Canada participants and members of the community for the ceremony.

The Peace Garden, located north of the pavilion near the community garden, is intended to provide a lasting space for learning, reflection and conversations about reconciliation beyond Sept. 30.

The event is also designed to emphasize accessibility and inclusion, with Active Lives Canada encouraging people of different ages and abilities to participate.

Children, families, schools, community organizations and residents are all welcome to attend, with the community particularly encouraged to take part in the 11 a.m. ceremony and flag raising.

Active Lives Canada supports people with intellectual, developmental, neurological and physical disabilities. The organization says the event will provide participants with an opportunity to play an active role in a community gathering focused on dignity, respect, listening and belonging.

“Our participants deserve opportunities not simply to attend community events, but to be part of creating them,” Active Lives said. “On Sept. 30, we want people of different abilities, ages and backgrounds standing together, learning together and showing that reconciliation and belonging are responsibilities shared by the entire community.”

The Every Child Matters Community Day will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Fiddle Park, located at 96 Fiddle Park Lane in Shelburne.
