On Wednesday, April 22, during the Shelburne Minor Hockey Association annual awards banquet, the Ryan Appleton Memorial Volunteer Award was presented to Dave Metz.
This was the highest honour of the night, and several awards were presented by coaching staff for outstanding performance during the 2014/15 hockey season.
“The Shelburne Minor Hockey Association, together with the Appleton family of Dave, Tammy, Corey and Shaun, are pleased to present the Ryan Appleton Memorial Volunteer Award to Mr. Metz,” said Mike Fazackerley, past president of the Shelburne Minor Hockey Association. “Sadly, Ryan was taken from his family and our community unexpectedly and at an early age, however; it is our hope that Ryan’s memory and contribution to both our community and Shelburne Minor Hockey might live on endlessly through the establishment of this award.
Although Ryan did not play hockey in Shelburne, he proved to be a shining example of someone always willing to help by volunteering his time. Whether in the time box, setting up for tournaments or any job that needed muscle, Ryan was always willing and happy to help in any way possible.
“This award is our way of saying thank you and for remembering Ryan and his contributions by recognizing others from within our organization that have displayed the same selfless commitment to the betterment of our club and our community. Thank you Ryan; you will always be a part of the SMHA family,” said Fazackerley.
Those nominated for this award need to demonstrate the same qualities as Ryan. Which include: volunteering their time in any capacity to SMHA – past or present; acting as a role model and example for others to follow; demonstrating compassion and consideration to all others and leaving a positive and lasting impression on all those they have had contact with.
Past recipients include Tom Reid, Jeff Dyke, Rob Fetterly and Sue Peterson.
